Today our world is centered around technology, because our students use technology daily, teachers have a responsibility to educate students on understanding responsible use of technology. This refers to the use of computers, the internet, and student safety when using social media. As the use of technologies continually increase, we become more dependent for day to day uses. When teaching students, the responsibility of digital citizenship it gives them the knowledge, skills, and resources to engage in a digital environment.

According to Nina W. at GoGuardian the top five concepts to cover within school instruction are:

Information Literacy: Students need to understand how to sift through the lies. They need to understand how to do conduct proper searches and to determine credible reference materials.

Cyberbullying Prevention: This is a topic that has is a huge concern for teachers and students, unfortunately because people can hide behind a digital identity this problem is increasing. But the idea is to teach students early to engage respectfully online, establish guidelines and include responsible online communication. Model appropriate behaviours for students and emphasize kindness and empathy.

Online Safety: This is one of the most important topics, teaching students to protect themselves and their identities by using appropriate websites, and teaching students to not post personal information about themselves.

Digital Responsibility: This is a good topic where students can learn life long skills for the digital world. Teachers should teach about hacking, privacy and viruses. Students should also understand what plagiarizing is and what are the consequences can be.

Health and Emotional Wellness in the Digital World: This is a concept refers to how technology can be addictive and how there are connections to extended use of technologies and physical and phycological issues. Although teachers need to instruct the safety of using technologies understanding that extensive use can affect ones social-emotional wellness.

I believe that GoGuardian has some very valid points and important instructional concepts concerning digital citizenship. These are concepts that I would include in the technology curriculum. I also understand the importance of using technology in the classroom so with saying that, we have to teach safety to protect our students.

Another resource we covered this week was using common sense education. This interactive website had many resources for teachers. It provides lesson plans, posters, instructional presentations, class posters and visual aids that can help with teaching the above-mentioned concepts concerning technology.
