My Long Exposure Adventure

What is a long exposure photo?

Long exposure photography is so much fun. Long exposure is when you open the camera shutter for a long period of time. This allows for more light to enter, this makes the objects that are moving blur and the objects that are stationary stay clear. This technique uses similar camera settings that are used in light painting (my previous post). It is recommended that you use a tripod, I did and found this very helpful. Trouble shooting: the next time I take long exposure photos I would use my timer on my camera. This will help with reducing unnecessary blur and create clearer pictures.

I decided to go on an adventure around Cranbrook and play with my camera settings for long exposure shots. Here are my results.

Camera settings: Shutter speed 15, Aperture f8, ISO 100
Camera settings: Shutter speed 1.3, Aperture f8, ISO 100
Camera settings: Shutter speed 1.0, Aperture f8, ISO 100
Camera settings: Shutter speed 5.0, Aperture f8, ISO 100
Camera settings: Shutter speed 13.0, Aperture f8, ISO 100
Camera settings: Shutter speed 13.0, Aperture f8, ISO 100

Overall playing with camera setting for long exposure photographs is not a difficult process. I had fun and will continue exploring the setting on my camera. I would like to try long exposure and moving water I think the results will be awesome.

I found this video helpful when learning the “how to” of long exposure photography. Josh Katz is the creator and does a great job explaining settings of the camera when talking long exposure pictures. josh provides some amazing examples, along with a variety of view point ideas.
