Welcome to Grade 1/2 Class

This week we had the amazing opportunity to visit a grade 1/2 class. The students were welcoming and kind to us throughout our visit. I am thankful to the teacher for sharing their knowledge, and allowing us to take pictures and assist any students that may need help with their morning work.

Class Library

The class library is very organized. The books are stored behind a curtain and when its time for students to access the books she removes the drape. There is a large table near the library so that students have other spaces to read their chosen books.

In the classroom there are a few book storage areas. The photo to the right represents books that are part of a reading program. Students participate in a home reading program, where they read books at home with a caregiver and return the book the following day for another selection.

Alphabet Wall Display

Throughout the past 10 years most classes I have visited had the alphabet displayed through the sound connections program. This class is working on a new program called UFLI for literacy. The alphabet is displayed with the ASL (American Sign Language) and is displayed at the front of the classroom where all students can see. I really liked the idea and would definitely incorporate this display into my classroom.

Flexible Seating

I am a fan of flexible seating! In this class the teacher provides areas on the floor, tables and this awesome egg chair. Flexible seating can provide students a comfy place to read their chosen book. It will also gives students the opportunity to build skills toward independent learning. If I have the opportunity to have a classroom I would like to bring in options of flexible seating.

Posters for Literacy

These are just a few posters that I noticed displayed in the classroom. I really like the making connections poster! I do know that the heart words board is part of the UFLI literacy program. I wanted to include the “We are wondering” board because it was located in the library area and I thought it was fitting.

The board displayed in the picture above is interesting because it reminded me of the sound connections program. I hope next time we visit we will see how this display is used in action! Love vowel valley!
